Dhoni plays as wicketkeeper-batsman in the team. While wicketkeeping, he has to keep switching between helmet and cap as per the demands of the game.
When a fast bowler is bowling, he stands far behind the wicket and wears. On the other hand, if a spinner or medium pacer is bowling, he stands just behind the wicket and wears the helmet.
In cricket when the wicketkeeper does not wear the helmet, he keeps it on the ground far behind the wicket. Thus being a wicketkeeper, it will require him to put the helmet on the ground sometimes.
The National Flag is a symbol of pride and honour. Thus, Dhoni decided that he will not have the flag on the helmet. So out of respect for the National Flag, he does not wear a helmet with Indian Flag on it.
